English Literature summer work

Overview

Welcome to English Literature at Hills Road. We really hope that you enjoy your time with us.

The work

Below, please see the summer work we have set in order to prepare you for classes starting in September.

Compulsory work should not exceed 5 hours.

We will start with a look at contemporary poetry through the anthology Poems of the Decade: An Anthology of the Forward Books of Poetry (2015) ISBN: 9780571325405. Read the poems by Patience Agbabi, Simon Armitage, Ros Barber and Ian Duhig. The first few lessons will ask what contemporary poetry is ‘like’. Please bring with you some writing (about one side of A4) reflecting on your experience of contemporary poetry, its themes, style and what you like and dislike about it. Watch the interview with Simon Armitage (link below) as a starting point. Do you consider poetry a form of dissent? Do you consider being an English Literature student a form of dissent?
