English Literature summer work

Overview

Welcome to English Literature at Hills Road. We really hope that you enjoy your time with us.

The work

Below, please see the summer work we have set in order to prepare you for classes starting in September.

Compulsory work should not exceed 5 hours.

  1. We will start with a look at contemporary poetry through the anthology Poems of the Decade: An Anthology of the Forward Books of Poetry (2015) ISBN: 9780571325405. Read the poems by Patience Agbabi, Simon Armitage, Ros Barber and Ian Duhig - these poems are attached on the Word Document below, so there is no need for you to purchase them yet.
  2. The first few lessons will ask what contemporary poetry is ‘like’. Please bring with you a contemporary poem of your choice; it should be a poem that you have not studied for GCSE; be prepared to share your interpretation of this poem in small group with classmates.
  3. We would also like you to watch the Animated Tales version of Hamlet by William Shakespeare, available online (e.g. Youtube)
