Welcome to Classical Civilisation.
To help you prepare for your Classical Civilisation course, we have included below links to a range of videos which touch upon the themes you are likely to explore during your two years of study. Three main components of the A Level Classical Civilisation course you will be studying are: ' The World of the Hero', 'Culture and the Arts' and 'Beliefs and Ideas'.
Task 1: Please, watch the two videos below and find out what Dr Emily Hauser and Professor Stephen Harrison say about gods in Homer's Iliad and Virgil's Aeneid.
Do they have their favourite gods? Who is your favourite god? Please, prepare a few lines about your favourite god (a Greek or Roman god - it is your choice) and bring your notes with you in your first lesson.
Task 2: The Greek Theatre module will be taught in Year 2. The video below will give you a very brief but excellent introduction to the module. Just listen, enjoy and make notes. Two tragedies (Sophocles' Oedipus the King and Euripides' Bacchae) and a comedy (Aristophanes' Frogs) will be explored in detail.
Task 3: Politics of the Late Republic is a module we will be working on in Year 1. Through examining the lives and beliefs of Cato the Younger, Caesar, Cicero and Pompey we will deep into the discussion about the reasons for the downfall of the Roman Republic.
Professor Mary Beard will be your guide through some stages of the History of Rome. Please watch the video below and make your notes about Caesar and Pompey. We will be examining their lives in detail.
Please refer to these digital resources as part of your Summer Work preparation.
