A level Earth Science subjects explained

Hills Road Sixth Form College offers three individual A level Earth Sciences subjects: 

  • Environmental Science
  • Geology
  • Geography 

Studying one or more of these can help you develop skills such as critical thinking, data handling and interpretation, spatial analysis and communication, and can open up future career opportunities in green energy, sustainability consulting, urban planning, politics, transport, palaeontology and conservation.

Geology

Explore how the Earth works through investigation of its physical history, minerals, rocks, and natural hazards.

You will study topics such as fossils, past life and climates, plate tectonics, and natural resources in the classroom and laboratory, as well as during fieldwork. This multidisciplinary approach is designed to deepen your understanding of the Earth’s physical processes and natural resources.

Geography

Investigate the relationships between places and people, and challenges at local, regional, and global scales—from urban growth and its impact on water cycles to conflict over land and climate change effects on physical and human systems.

You will complete an independent investigation on a topic of your choice and learn through classroom teaching, data analysis, and fieldwork.

Environmental Science

Investigate through science our planet’s living and physical environments, as well as its biological and natural resources, and how these are interconnected.

Through studying wildlife conservation, resource management, energy use, pollution, food production and sustainability, you will develop an in-depth understanding of the problems the planet faces, as well as the solutions.

I have really enjoyed studying Geology. There is a good mix of practical and theory based work. You can pick up the content quickly and easily, and from varying levels of knowledge at the start of the year.
