Hills Road Sixth Form College is announcing plans to establish a new Multi Academy Trust (MAT), initially with Hills Road Sixth Form College as a sole 16-19 Academy.

The trust, named Hills Education Trust, will be dedicated to delivering high-quality progression pathways for young people aged 16-18 across Cambridgeshire and the surrounding areas. The trust is set to launch on 1st September 2025.

About the College

Hills Road Sixth Form College is home to nearly 3,000 students, offering a diverse range of academic opportunities through 36 A level subjects, as well as the Future Ready Programme, which includes the Extended Project Qualification, Year 12 Enrichment and Tutorial support. The College is consistently oversubscribed and has built a national reputation for excellence. It has topped government performance league tables almost every year since their inception over 30 years ago and has achieved Outstanding status across all categories in every Ofsted inspection framework so far.

There will be no structural or contractual changes at Hills Road Sixth Form College as a result of this move away from the FE sector and all current and future stakeholders should experience Hills Road Sixth Form College very much as it is now.

The creation of Hills Education Trust marks an exciting new chapter for our College and we hope will strengthen our partnerships with other academies and school trusts across the region, creating new opportunities together to enhance educational outcomes for young people.

Jo Trump, Principal.

Why a Multi Academy Trust?

In order to continue providing a high-quality academic progression route for Cambridgeshire young people, the College is seeking to ensure its continued independence and safeguard its mission and purpose by forming its own separate Multi Academy Trust. This move will ensure that Hills Road Sixth Form College can maintain its commitment to welcoming students from all local schools – regardless of which school or Multi Academy Trust they have come from - and continuing to offer an academic 16-19 pathway that is accessible to all local students who wish to pursue it.

With a significant increase in the number of young people expected to transition into the 16-19 phase of education over the next five years – particularly with the government's plans for growth in Cambridge – Hills Education Trust will be well-positioned to support the need for expanded 16-19 educational opportunities in the region, should they arise.

Our vision is to create a flexible and dynamic academy trust that will operate Hills Road Sixth Form College and potentially manage new educational provisions and partnerships as the opportunities occur in the region.

"The creation of Hills Education Trust marks an exciting new chapter for our College and we hope will strengthen our partnerships with other academies and school trusts across the region, creating new opportunities together to enhance educational outcomes for young people. This collaboration ensures Hills Road Sixth Form College’s future and allows us to retain our ability to serve all local schools and students equally.” Jo Trump, Principal.

We are excited about the opportunities that this new venture will bring and look forward to contributing to the future of education in our community.
