Get into Poetry - three-day poetry course

The Get into Poetry three-day Summer School is suitable for beginners and intermediate poets.

About the course

This three-day poetry course is suited for anyone who would like to experiment with poetry writing in a friendly and supportive environment. The course is suited for beginners and intermediate poets alike and will consist of playful writing exercises and prompts.

During the course, you will have time to create first drafts while receiving encouraging and constructive feedback. We will read poems by established poets, and create our own work in response to some of them. During the course we will explore the following themes:

  • Writing with the senses: how to evoke a strong sense of place and scenery in our writing
  • Figurative language: creating strong similes and metaphors
  • Line breaks: the function of enjambment in poetry
  • Visual image: how to evoke colours, light and shade and different patterns in our writing
  • Getting to know the current UK poetry scene: tips on poetry readings, poetry competitions and contemporary poetry magazines.
