A Level Geography students took advantage of technology to take a virtual trip to inner city Birmingham during lessons this week.
The virtual reality headsets, which were purchased through the Local Skills Improvement Fund, will enable students to access a wide range of immersive experiences and offer a wider range of teaching and learning activities to teaching staff.
Kevin Dobson, Head of Earth Sciences, explained how students benefitted from the use of virtual reality technology for this learning activity. “By immersing themselves in the virtual imagery of Birmingham, students have been able to carry out interactive fieldwork activities without actually needing to travel there – which could be timely, costly, and have a negative impact on our planet through transport-related emissions.”
"I felt like I was actually in Birmingham," said Elly, an A level Geography student reflecting on the lesson. “It’s a great way to see the different places from a different perspective instead of just a picture.”
Ian Pryer, Deputy Principal, said, “It’s fantastic to see this technology being used in classrooms, following our successful Local Skills Improvement Fund bid last year.
"The headsets will provide immersive and exciting ways for students to engage with their learning in a range of subjects and visit, virtually, locations that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to reach.
"We are looking forward to seeing more and more use of this equipment and technology across the curriculum, including our recent partnership with local life science employers to create immersive Biology A Level and work experience content."
