As Hills Road Sixth Form College marks its 50th anniversary, we’ve invited alumni to share their fondest memories of their time at the college. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, we’re thrilled to spotlight a love story that blossomed in the heart of Hills Road!

Sam James, a Hills Road alum who studied here between 2009 and 2011, reflects on how the college played a central role in shaping not only his education but also his future family.

Sam and Zoe at Hills

“My wife Zoe and I first met during our time at Hills Road. At first, we were simply friends of friends of friends, but over time, we found ourselves part of the same larger friendship group in the lower sixth.

We spent most of our days hanging out in what was then affectionately known as ‘The Basement.’ It was there that Zoe and I became close friends, bonding over our mutual love of video games, films, and all things nerdy. That connection grew deeper, and on Christmas Eve 2010, I kissed her. The rest, as they say, is history.

Even after leaving Hills Road, our story continued. We maintained a long-distance relationship when I moved to Birmingham for university, and later, Zoe joined me for my third and fourth years there. From Birmingham, we moved to Peterborough when I started my first job. In 2016, we tied the knot. Fast forward to today, and we’re proud parents to two wonderful children, aged 6 and 2.”

Sam and Zoe’s story is a heartwarming reminder of the lifelong bonds formed at Hills Road. As we celebrate 50 years of memories, stories like theirs illustrate the vibrant community and connections that have always been a hallmark of Hills Road.

So, this Valentine’s Day, as we look back on the past five decades, we celebrate not only academic achievements but also the relationships that make Hills Road such a special place.
