Students at Hills Road Sixth Form College have once again proven the power of collective fundraising action, raising a staggering £39,186.81 for a wide range of charities during Social Action Week 2025, held from 19th to 23rd May.

Now in its eighth year, Social Action Week offers Year 12 students the opportunity to step beyond the classroom and into their communities, supporting charities of their choice through proactive fundraising and hands-on social action. From bake sales to sports tournaments, creative challenges to community events, this year’s efforts were bigger and bolder than ever before.

Raising money, raising awareness

All week, groups of Year 12 students were hard at work - on campus and all over Cambridge - in their efforts to raise as much as they possibly could for their chosen charity.

2025 beneficiary causes ranged from local community initiatives to international humanitarian organisations, and everything in between: RNLI, Mind, British Heart Foundation, Connected Lives, Petals, Jimmy's, Young Minds, Medical Aid for Palestinians, Samaritans Cambridge, Cambridge Women’s Aid, Stand Up to Cancer, and many, many more.

Fundraising with a difference

Students were incredibly creative in their efforts and deployed a huge range of fundraising ideas.

Many chose tailor-made attractions as their fundraising draw, such as children’s games, circus-inspired activities and a tennis tournament.

Activities cropping up across Cambridge included craft stalls, face painting, interactive murals, or even more unconventional methods such as offering the chance to throw a pie or a water balloon at a volunteer!

Bake sales and food stalls were especially popular, with many groups choosing to attract hungry passers-by on Parkers' Piece.

Options included traditional Ukrainian food (in support a Ukrainian charity), home-made mocktails for Mind, or even home-baked dog treats in aid of the RSPCA.

Showing real entrepreneurship, many students thought outside the box find a USP. A bake sale (raising money for Cancer Research) offered customers a punch on a 'strike out cancer' ball with each treat purchased.

One savvy group even sought to leverage hungry Hills Road staff who might be marking or otherwise desk-bound, with a coffee-and-cookie delivery service!

The grand total...

We are delighted to confirm the amount raised during Social Action Week 2025 is a truly remarkable £39,186.81!

To raise such an amount is truly an outstanding achievement, and everyone who took part should feel extremely proud.

Social Action Week 2025 may be over, but our students' resourcefulness and proactiveness remain.

Well done to Year 12 for displaying real dedication to the planning, coordination, and teamwork and raising money in the process!
