As part of the Hills Road 50th anniversary celebrations, we are taking a trip down memory lane. What was happening in the world during our first academic year? 

  • On Thursday 24th Unemployment exceeds the 1,000,000 mark for March 1975
  • On Saturday 26th A conference of Labour Party members votes against continued membership of the EEC (the forerunner of the European Union).
  • On Saturday 19th The Cambodian genocide began two days after the fall of Phnom Penh, as the new Khmer Rouge regime announced that all former government employees, including soldiers, military officers, and policemen, would be required to register with the new local authorities.
  • On Thursday 24th Six terrorists of the Baader-Meinhof Gang (officially the "Red Army Faction") terrorists took over the West German embassy in Sweden, took 11 hostages, and demanded the release of 26 of the group's jailed members.
  • On Tuesday 29th in Saigon the order to carry out Operation Frequent Wind was received, commencing the evacuation of all Americans from South Vietnam, as well as South Vietnamese nationals who might face retaliation.
  • "Funny Lady": The sequel to "Funny Girl," starring Barbra Streisand and James Caan, led the UK box office in early April 1975. 
  • "Tommy": Directed by Ken Russell and featuring a star-studded cast, this rock opera continued to captivate audiences, securing the second spot at the box office.
  • "Escape to Witch Mountain": This Disney adventure film, directed by John Hough, gained popularity among family audiences, ranking third in box office earnings.

  • Robbie Fowler: Born on 9th April, Robbie Fowler would go on to become a renowned Liverpool footballer, celebrated for his goal-scoring prowess.

  • Chiang Kai-shek: On 5th April, Chiang Kai-shek, President of the Republic of China who retreated to Taiwan after the Communist takeover of mainland China, passed away.
