Get into Poetry - one-day workshop

The Get into Poetry Summer School is suitable for beginners and intermediate poets wishing to create and develop work in a supportive environment.

About the course

This one-day workshop is suited to participants who would like to experiment with poetry writing in a friendly and supportive environment. The workshop is suitable for beginners and intermediate poets alike and will consist of playful writing exercises and prompts. You will have time to create a first draft of your poem while receiving encouraging and constructive feedback.

You will read poems by established poets and create your own work in response to some of them. During the day you will explore the following themes with your tutor and fellow classmates:

  • Writing with the senses: how to evoke a strong sense of place and scenery in our writing
  • Figurative language: creating strong similes and metaphors
  • Line breaks: the function of enjambment in poetry
  • Visual image: how to evoke colours, light and shade and different patterns in your writing
  • Getting to know the current UK poetry scene : tips on poetry readings, poetry competitions and contemporary poetry magazines.
